TARIKI LABORATORY -Experimental Tea Party-

Subtle shifts in atmospheric pressure, faint tremors in the earth, the flicker of light and wind, the presence of living things, the drift of clouds. There is a force at work beyond human perception and control. We call this force “Tariki.” Tariki Laboratory captures and records this Tariki in our own format, called “.trk.” When .trk data is transposed into something else – a shape, a color, a sound – we come face to face with a presence we had never noticed before. In other words, even in an age when everything is being brought under control, we come face to face with a vast margin that still remains in the world. Through that experience, we create an opening for people to receive new creativity together.

Tariki Institute — An Experimental Tea Ceremony turns the entire venue into a single tea room for a tea ceremony with no host. In the host’s place, it is not a person but data that guides the space. Azbil’s high-precision sensors capture subtle fluctuations beforehand — from nature, architecture, and cities in locations around the world — which are then converted into tariki data (.trk) through the latent space of an AI algorithm built by Tengun-label. Using technology from Toyo Seikan, that data is poured into a preform, the raw material for a PET bottle, and free-blow molding shapes a vessel that never takes the same form twice. And then, as you bring ITO EN’s tea to your lips, you come face to face with the rich subtleties of daily life that so often go unnoticed.

Tariki Laboratory was launched in March 2025 as an open innovation hub dedicated to measuring and collecting “Tariki,” an invisible and mysterious force, and to exploring how it can be put to use. Players from different fields and companies—data scientists, product designers, AI engineers, art directors, and others—gather across disciplinary boundaries. With no fixed membership, its composition shifts organically from project to project, as it researches ways to apply Tariki across a wide range of industries.
