Transposition
In my practice, I have worked with wood and repeatedly used wooden crates—made to protect and transport artworks—as a recurring motif. This project extends that interest to pallets and crates that support the production and transportation of furniture. Typically made from inexpensive construction materials or offcuts, these objects are recreated using wood intended for furniture, along with furniture-making techniques of fabrication and finishing. By allowing objects that are not furniture to take on its materials and finishes, the work brings them closer to the realm of furniture, reconsidering the relationship between products and their peripheries, and between what is made and what supports it.
overview
Drawing on the dimensions and structures of wooden pallets actually used at Karimoku Furniture’s factory, the installation consists of multiple pallets and three crates of varying sizes and forms. The pallets and crates are finished in colors newly developed for this work based on the KNS color palette. While retaining their familiar forms, they take on finishes associated with furniture and are stacked and combined throughout the exhibition space. The installation brings together the familiar forms of objects found in factories and logistics with surfaces that evoke furniture, allowing these two qualities to coexist within the same objects.
