Voidbark

“Voidbark” is a project that explores new industrial value in the bark of large-diameter logs distributed for architectural and furniture use. Thick and resilient bark is harvested and transformed into products through woodworking techniques. More than 50 tons of such bark are discarded or chipped annually, and this project seeks to rediscover it as a material and unlock its industrial potential.

Outline

Exploring industrial applications of bark sourced from fine woods—including walnut, zelkova, and other species.
An exhibition of everyday objects, design products, and furniture.

Members

Based in Shizuoka and the Tokai region, Kameyama Lumber Mill supplies architectural and furniture timber, carefully preparing fine woods to meet the needs of local makers. Processing over 700 tons of lumber annually, the mill discards or chips as much as 50 tons of bark each year.

OTHER DESIGN takes notice of this overlooked material, developing plans and design concepts. Iwakagu applies woodworking techniques to transform the bark into new products. Interpreting the unique qualities of bark, Shinya Rachi elevates them into visual imagery, beautifully expressing the essence of this local project.
